How Much Caffeine in A Cup of Tea?

Many people may think tea is naturally caffine-free, but actually tea does contain caffine. But the amount of caffine in a cup of tea is lower than a cup of coffee, and the types of tea and brewing times can affect the amount of caffeine in a cup of tea. The caffeine content of a cup of coffee is 3 times that of a cup of ordinary tea;

  • The caffeine of a cup of coffee is 80mg (the general range is 40-170mg);
  • The caffeine of black tea is 40mg (the general range is 25-110mg);
  • The caffeine of oolong tea is 30mg (general range is 12-55mg); caffeine content of green tea is 20mg (general range is 8-30mg); caffeine content of Pu'er is 10mg (general range is 5-20mg).   
Under the premise of health, the daily limit of caffeine intake per person is about 400 mg, so drinking tea has only a refreshing effect on health and no harm.

 

Of course, the brewing time will also affect the caffeine in tea. The longer the brewing time, the more caffeine will be extracted, and vice versa.

  • A cup of 235 ml of black tea contains about 47 mg of caffeine, 
  • The amount of caffeine of 235 ml instant coffee is 62 mg
  • The caffeine content of freshly ground coffee is 95 mg
